Nitesh Kumar Makes History with Gold at Paris Paralympics 2024
On September 2, 2024, Indian shuttler Nitesh Kumar made a significant mark in Paralympic history by clinching his first gold medal at the Paris Paralympics. Kumar’s victory in the Para-Badminton Men’s Singles SL3 category came after a gripping final against Britain’s Daniel Bethell, which concluded with scores of 21-14, 18-21, and 23-21 at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

This monumental achievement not only adds to India’s medal tally but also reaffirms the country’s growing prowess in para-badminton. With this win, India’s overall medal count at the Paris Paralympics now stands at 11, including two golds, four silvers, and five bronzes. Kumar’s performance is particularly noteworthy as he successfully retained the SL3 gold medal, an honor first achieved by Pramod Bhagat at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where the SL3 category made its debut.
Kumar’s victory was the result of a marathon match lasting one hour and 20 minutes. His precise shot selections and strategic play were instrumental in overcoming the Tokyo silver medalist, Bethell. Reflecting on his historic win, Kumar shared his emotional experience, saying, “Now I can feel what I have done. When the national anthem was playing and the flag was slowly going up, that moment gave me goosebumps. Now I can say that I have done something huge for my country and I am proud of myself.”
In the SL3 category, players compete with severe lower limb disabilities, which requires them to play on a half-width court. Kumar’s triumph exemplifies the extraordinary skill and determination needed to excel in this category.
India’s success at the Games also includes notable performances by other athletes. Thulasimathi Murugesan earned a silver medal, while Manisha Ramadass secured a bronze in the women’s singles SU5 category, showcasing the depth and talent within the Indian para-badminton team.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Kumar’s outstanding achievement on social media, acknowledging his remarkable skills and dedication. He wrote on X, “A tremendous achievement by Nitesh Kumar in the Para Badminton Men’s Singles SL3, as he wins the Gold! He is known for his incredible skills and perseverance. May he keep motivating upcoming athletes.”
Nitesh Kumar’s gold medal is not just a personal triumph but a proud moment for the entire nation, highlighting the exceptional capabilities of athletes competing under challenging circumstances. His success continues to inspire and set new benchmarks in the world of para-sports.
