Vinesh Phogat Criticizes PT Usha Over Unauthorized Hospital Photo at Paris Olympics

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has accused Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha of taking a photo of her without consent while she was in the hospital during the Paris Olympics. The incident occurred after Vinesh, a top medal contender, was disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling gold medal match due to missing the weigh-in by a mere 100 grams. This led to her heartbreaking elimination from the tournament, nullifying her previous victories.
Vinesh’s Struggles in Paris Olympics
Vinesh Phogat’s journey in the Paris Olympics was marred by disappointment. Despite her valiant efforts, including staying up all night and even cutting her hair in a desperate attempt to make weight, she was unable to meet the qualification requirements. The emotional and physical toll was immense, leading to her hospitalization in the Games Village.
PT Usha, who visited her at the hospital, assured her of support, but Vinesh claims no meaningful help was extended. Instead, a photo of their meeting surfaced online, which Vinesh says was taken without her permission. The viral image, according to Vinesh, was shared for optics rather than genuine support.
Vinesh’s Response to the Photo Incident
Speaking to the media, Vinesh expressed her disappointment with the handling of the situation. She explained, “You’re in a vulnerable state, lying on a hospital bed, dealing with one of the toughest moments of your life, and someone takes a photo without telling you, just to show they are with you. That’s not real support. It felt like a political move.”
Vinesh also highlighted the lack of tangible support from the IOA, adding that the whole episode left her disillusioned. “There’s politics everywhere,” she said, hinting at internal issues within the sports administration.
Retirement and Entry into Politics
Following her disqualification, Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling, deeply affected by the turn of events. An appeal was filed by the IOA to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to challenge her disqualification, but the request was denied. Despite the heartbreak, Vinesh received a hero’s welcome upon her return to India.
Soon after, Vinesh Phogat decided to embark on a new journey by joining Indian politics under the banner of the Indian National Congress. Her transition from sports to politics marks a new chapter in her life, as she now looks to fight for the rights of athletes and bring attention to the challenges faced within the sports ecosystem in India.
Twitter Reactions:
- “Vinesh Phogat deserved better support. Unfortunate to see how athletes are treated in tough times.”
- “A sad end to a legendary career. Wishing Vinesh all the best in her new journey in politics.”
